so im sittin here thinking...lets be real guildwars 2 will probably be released early 2011...if eariler cool...but will the game population slowly dwindling do you think that there will be sizable community left in the game in the next year or so, with nomore new content or expansions coming out.??

Some people quit playing and are just waiting for GW2. The community is going keep getting less, don't know how small it's going to be when GW2 is out. Then again it also depends on when the release it, if it's during Christmas then we might some more players.

I think the gamer base will slowly dwindle, but when the time comes when gw2 is going to be released, I think a spike will be seen of people trying to get last minute HoM monuments, etc.

I really think they need to release new content to keep enough of the current population active and to keep the hype for Guild Wars 2 high enough to ensure a good launch. With no new content and a dwindling active population more and more people are leaving the game. I figure about one tenth to one quarter of them will also drop out of the first wave of sales for Guild Wars 2.
I figure the best time to release Guild Wars 2 would be 3 quarter 2010. If they wait until 2011 they are going to miss the train unless NCSoft does something they are not normally very good at; marketing. The only time I have see really good marketing from NCSoft was for Aion. But that did not help in China.

Though I agree they should release some content - the chance is slim. They would've announced if they had something in the work.

I think gw population will slowly dwindle the further along we go, but that is natural for any game pretty much. And i wouldn't say no more new content. The Live team are suppose to be working on pretty sizable projects ;-). But just because sizeable numbers of people leave GW doesn't mean they won't return once GW2 comes out.

The GW community will not dwindle it will just become less active. There are many people who play very little due to no new content and nothing to do in the game. These players are not gone but only waiting for new content to enjoy.

I think so, too. :P All the people with experience that've done everything might leave for a while but the newbies will keep flocking in as much as ever.

ANet's marketing strategy here is made of fail. The more time that elapses between the two games, the greater the risk that players will find another time-consuming game and never return.

I was pretty heavily involved in the Civ 4 community at that game's release. As I started playing more GW PvP in late 2005, it became impossible to play both games and live in RL. I never bought any of the Civ 4 expansions through no fault of Firaxis (Civ 4 is a truly great game). GW won out in part simply because I'd had an extra six months to get integrated into the community, and didn't want to leave that behind.

The longer the wait between games, the more likely it becomes that Blizzard (Diablo 3) or Bioware (SW:tOR) will hit market first, snatch players up and not let them go. I don't know what went wrong in development initially, but that holdup is likely to cost ANet a lot of business.

Still .. Arena nets idea of "new content" is giving us that crappy event every single week which is usually useless to our general gameplay.

OH NOES! I already capped all the skills >.>

I can say I will be around for GW2 though, I'll probably play this game up and till then too, maybe a goal for a full Torment Weapon HoM is right in mind?

The current community is MUCH less important to Anet than gathering NEW players. It is simply marketing strategy. The success of Guild Wars 2 is going to depend on how many new players they bring in moreso than how many Guild Wars 1 players stay with the franchise.

I think you get new players just from the hype of a new MMO. and it will probably settle down to a smaller number over time as all games do.

They will almost certainly lose a lot of players between now and 2011 the problem for the company is what those players are doing while we await gw2.

Some will just wait but if too many move to other games they may not return.
There will always be new players of course.

It probably comes down to those already disaffected who will buy Diablo 3 and the hard core gw players who will probably move to gw2.

Its all in the timing of the release dates.

That is really off. This is not a subscription based game. Yes for subscription based services in general what matters is getting new people to subscribe since you already get money from those that are subscribed.

For GW2 is "how many boxes they will sell". Hence the current player base is extremely important because of two reasons:
1) they hope to get money out of their pocket again, with the new GW2 box
2) they hope the current player base would advertise their game to friends so that they get new players in as well.

For GW2 it's all about their current/previous players. If they don't buy it and advertise it, there are slim chances that random people that never heard of GW would care about a sequel called GW2.
